New ChatGPT chat. Continue the same task.
Memory V5 is not designed to store your full chat history. It keeps the information needed to continue a long-running task: the goal, current focus, confirmed decisions, completed work, excluded approaches, unresolved issues, and the next step. In a new chat, it restores that task state for you to review before work continues.

What usually gets lost between chats is task state.
After a project has been discussed for many rounds, a new chat may know the topic but still miss what was already decided, completed, ruled out, or left unfinished.
Confirmed decisions get reopened
Things already settled in the old chat can look undecided again.
Excluded approaches come back
An approach that was explicitly rejected can be suggested again.
Completed work gets repeated
The new chat may understand the project without knowing what is already done.
The next starting point is unclear
Manually rebuilding the handoff gets harder as the conversation grows.
If your questions are usually finished in one or two turns, Memory V5 may not add much value.
Example: carry task progress from an old chat into a new one.
This is not a transcript summary. It is task state saved so the work can continue.

What does Memory V5 keep?
Task goal
What the task is ultimately trying to achieve.
Current focus
What is being worked on now, so the new chat starts in the right place.
Confirmed decisions
What has already been decided, separate from ideas still under discussion.
Completed work
What is already finished and should not be repeated.
Excluded approaches
Routes explicitly not being used unless new evidence justifies revisiting them.
Unresolved issues and next step
Where work stopped and what should happen next.
Compared with a normal summary: a summary mainly condenses what was discussed. Memory V5 uses a fixed task-state structure and a restore-and-confirm flow so the work can continue.
Two ways to use it.
Standard: connect the MCP service
Once connected, ask Memory V5 to save the task and prepare a continuation package before you change chats. Send that package into the new chat.
More convenient: MCP + Power browser helper
On ChatGPT Web, Power prepares the continuation package and copies it to your clipboard. Power does not open a new Chat or send any message for you; you still open the new chat, paste, and send it yourself.
The current release is a manual ZIP install. Chrome Web Store distribution comes later.
Why not just ask the old chat for a summary?
You can. For a simple task, a normal summary may be enough. The difference is that a normal summary is not required to separate confirmed decisions, completed work, excluded approaches, unresolved issues, and the next step, and it does not include a fixed restore-and-confirm flow.
| Comparison | Normal summary | Memory V5 |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Condense what happened earlier | Continue the same task in a new chat |
| Confirmed decisions | May be included, but can be mixed with other content | Stored separately |
| Excluded approaches | May be omitted | Stored separately |
| Unfinished point | May not be highlighted | Recorded explicitly |
| In the new chat | The new chat interprets the summary on its own | Task state is restored first, then confirmed by the user |
ChatGPT already has Memory and Projects. Do you still need Memory V5?
Not necessarily. They solve different problems.
Want ChatGPT to remember long-term preferences?
Use ChatGPT's built-in Memory first.
Projects already cover your workflow?
If keeping chats, files, and instructions together is enough, you may not need another tool.
Need a long-running task to survive chat changes?
Memory V5 focuses on restoring explicit task progress before continuing.
It is not limited to ChatGPT.
Memory V5 is exposed through remote MCP. The full save-to-restore flow has been tested on ChatGPT Web. Other compatible clients can be tried, but their full Memory V5 flow is not yet fully tested.
ChatGPT Web
Connect, save, prepare continuation, restore in a new chat, confirm, and continue.
Codex
Codex supports remote MCP; the complete Memory V5 continuation flow has not yet been tested end to end there.
Gemini CLI
Gemini CLI supports remote MCP; the complete Memory V5 continuation flow has not yet been tested end to end there.
Other AI clients
They need remote MCP support and a compatible OAuth authorization flow.
When is Memory V5 a good fit?
Good fit
- A task lasts for days, weeks, or longer.
- You often need a new chat because the current one has become too long.
- The task already contains many decisions, completed items, and excluded approaches.
- You do not want to re-explain the whole project every time you change chats.
Probably unnecessary
- Your questions are usually solved in one or two turns.
- You only want the AI to remember personal preferences.
- ChatGPT Memory or Projects already meet your needs.
- The task is short and does not need to continue across chats.
If the task cannot be identified confidently, the system should not guess.
Review before continuing
The new chat shows the restored task state so you can check it first.
Stop when identity is unclear
If the correct task cannot be determined, the system should ask you to choose instead of guessing from a similar title.
Not a full-chat backup
Memory V5 stores what is needed to continue the task, not a permanent copy of the entire conversation.
Do not put passwords, API keys, seed phrases, or other secrets into task state. See Privacy for details.
Free during the public beta.
The free version supports up to 3 active tasks. Pricing, if any, will be decided after there is enough real repeat-use evidence.
Frequently asked questions
Does Memory V5 store my full chat history?
Not as long-term product data. Memory V5 mainly keeps the task information needed for continuation. During a genuine failure, Power may temporarily use a limited amount of recent local context for emergency continuation; see Privacy for details.
How is this different from ChatGPT Memory?
ChatGPT Memory is better suited to long-term preferences and other reusable personal information. Memory V5 focuses on how one specific task continues after you move to a new chat.
How is this different from ChatGPT Projects?
If Projects already let you continue your work smoothly, you may not need Memory V5. Memory V5 puts more emphasis on explicit task state, restore, and user confirmation.
How do I use it the first time?
Connect it once. Before changing chats, ask it to save the task and prepare it for continuation, then send the generated continuation package into the new chat.
Which platforms are supported?
ChatGPT Web has been fully tested. Codex and Gemini CLI can be tried, but the complete Memory V5 flow has not yet been tested end to end on those platforms. Other remote-MCP clients are experimental.
What if the wrong task is restored?
Do not confirm it. Point out what is wrong. If the system cannot determine which task should be restored, it should stop and ask you to choose instead of guessing.
Does it cost anything now?
No. The free version currently supports up to 3 active tasks.
Can I store passwords or API keys?
No. Passwords, API keys, cookies, seed phrases, and other secrets should not be written into task state.
Move to a new chat without rebuilding the whole project context.
Try it with one long-running task. The useful test is simple: in the new chat, can you continue from the unfinished point instead of explaining the project again?
